A Chance In Life's Scientific Committee

Today's youth, especially those marginalized by poverty, gender inequities, health issues or refugee status, face ever-evolving challenges to living a safe and fulfilling life. A Chance In Life is committed to ensuring our programs are always equipped to meet these challenges with the most up-to-date and proven models of youth development.

In 2018, A Chance In Life's board established the Scientific Committee, an advisory body whose members are chosen based on their recognized expertise in the fields of science of education, administration of educational institutions, laws regarding minors, protection of children, scientific research and psychology. The Committee's purpose is to:

  • (a) study, assess, evaluate ACIL activities (programs and projects) to provide recommendations on how to ensure their global quality; their feasibility and sustainability; their impact on the beneficiaries; and their effectiveness and efficacy of the programs; and
  • (b) make recommendations to the Board of Directors on new programs and project proposals and partnership agreements.

To achieve this, the Scientific Committee is charged with performing the following activities as needed to fulfill the goals above:

  • (a) collect metrics and information from current programs to establish a database of programs and projects;
  • (b) assess methodologies and strategies in place in ACIL programs and projects;
  • (c) facilitate opportunities of exchange among the international educators and directors;
  • (d) support, initiate and/or assist in formation and training opportunities for those responsible for the programs and projects;
  • (e) provide a forum for discussion and for the exchange of information, regionally and internationally, on matters of principle and of technical, legal and administrative practice affecting ACIL programs;
  • (f) review progress reports on the effectiveness and efficacy of current programs and projects and, given the case, provide recommendations to the Board;
  • (g) as requested by the Board of Directors, evaluate new project proposals and partnership agreements;
  • (h) facilitate collaboration with local academic institutions to provide services to ACIL programs and enhance their impact on beneficiaries; and
  • (i) as requested by the President of ACIL, provide information on ACIL programs to the Board of Directors, institutional and individual donors, and other stakeholders.

The Scientific Committee is currently chaired by Prof. Msgr. Guy-Réal Thivierge, Secretary General of the Foundation Gravissimum Educationis. His letter commemorating A Chance In Life's 75th Anniversary is available here.
