THE SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does the money I send go directly to the young person I’m sponsoring?

The children don’t get direct cash benefits. Better yet, your gift is combined with the gifts of other generous sponsors to ensure that as many young people as possible in that community are provided for and given the chance to live and grow together. This way, your gifts have the greatest impact possible!

How much does it cost, and what is the money specifically going towards?
It requires a monthly gift of $30 – that’s less than a dollar a day to give an at-risk youth a chance in life! You’ll be helping to keep a roof over your child’s head, giving them the clothes and supplies they need to attend school, and ensuring their caregivers onsite have the resources they need to care for your child’s everyday needs.

What specific benefits will the child I sponsor receive?
Many children in the countries we serve face hunger, homelessness, are unable to attend school, and have little say in what happens to them. Your sponsorship removes these hardships and instead gives them:

  • The chance to receive an education
  • The chance to live in a safe place with the resources to meet their needs
  • The chance to be a part of a supportive, caring community, and to help lead and shape that community through our approach of self-government
  • The encouragement and comfort that comes with knowing someone cares about them

What specific benefits will I receive as a sponsor?

  • You will be able to read your child's story and learn about about their lives
  • You will be able to send messages and photos of your own life to your child (please note all messages are reviewed by both ACIL and program partner staff)
  • You will receive semi-annual updates to hear how your support is making a difference in their lives, including an annual personalized update from your child
  • Special recognition on our honor roll of sponsors in our annual report

How long should my child sponsorship last?
A Chance In Life’s Sponsorship Program offers you the opportunity to stay with a child for a number of years, so that you can build a transformative relationship together.

While we hope that you will be able to continue your support of your sponsored child until he or she completes the program (usually when they reach the age of 18 – 22, depending on the program), we recognize that circumstances sometimes change. You may discontinue your child sponsorship at any time by calling our office at 212-980-8770.

Likewise, a sponsored child’s circumstances may also change. For example, a child’s family may move outside the reach of our programs. Should the child you sponsor no longer be able to be a part of our Towns, we will inform you as soon as possible and offer you the chance to help another at-risk child in the same community.

Will I be the only person sponsoring the child I'm helping?
Yes. Each young person will only be matched with one sponsor, unless donors specifically request to sponsor a child together. That’s why your support and encouragement mean so much to them! No other group or individual will be assigned to the child you sponsor.

What makes A Chance In Life different from other organizations with youth sponsorship programs?
While we ensure that the youth we serve have access to everything they require to fulfill their basic needs (food, shelter, access to an education, etc.), A Chance In Life is also dedicated to helping them develop as citizens and leaders. For over 75 years, our model of self-governance has allowed the children we serve to learn the skills and critical thinking required to be active, thoughtful members of a community. Our programs teach our children that they each have a voice – and the many powerful ways they can use it to bring positive change to their lives and the lives of those around them.
