BOYS' AND GIRLS' TOWNS OF ETHIOPIA

BUILDING ON STRONG FOUNDATIONS
Boys’ and Girls’ Towns of Ethiopia builds on the solid foundation of the work done in Italy over the past 75 years. Throughout the last decade, many young people arriving to the Towns in Italy have come from Ethiopia. In 2015, A Chance In Life inaugurated Boys’ and Girls’ Towns of Ethiopia to open up new possibilities for children in one of the poorest countries of the world. A Chance In Life is working with the young and dynamic Diocese of Emdibir to support the lives of four hundred children this year.

Our three programs in Ethiopia focus on giving young girls and boys the tools and support needed to become active participants in the shaping of their own lives and communities.

ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE YOUTH

GIVING A CHANCE IN LIFE TO CHILDREN IN ONE OF THE POOREST COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD
There are an estimated 4.6 million children in Ethiopia who are orphans. These children need the basic necessities to receive a chance in life. In A Chance In Life's new project, extremely poor or orphaned children are given clothes, food, medical assistance, school supplies and any extra support needed to attend school.

This year two hundred children will be helped through this program. In addition, their guardians are supported to develop income generating activities to provide social and economic stability to the children and family.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS

EMPOWERING YOUNG WOMEN TO COMPLETE THEIR EDUCATION
Picture
One of the challenges that girls in Ethiopia face is the lack of access to education. From primary school to high school, the enrollment of girls decreases dramatically. In higher levels of education, schools become scarcer and students must walk many hours each day to continue their studies. Because of this daily long and perilous journey, many girls drop out.

A Chance In Life’s project for high school girls provides homes for one hundred Ethiopian girls in a community setting close to their high schools. The program offers them the opportunity to live with other young women. Through monthly meetings, the girls come together to support one another and share their dreams and challenges.

YOUTH LIVING WITH DISABILITIES

GIVING YOUNG PEOPLE LIVING WITH DISABILITIES THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THEIR WORTH IN THE WORLD
In Ethiopia, people living with physical disabilities face enormous challenges. A Chance In Life’s project brings girls and boys living with disabilities together to learn entrepreneurship and business development skills.

The young people attend bi-weekly meetings to speak about their challenges and aspirations. Through these meetings they develop a social support system to help themselves become self-reliant and active participants in the broader society. A Chance In Life’s investment has increased the capacity of this project from 25 to 100 participants.
