"A decision had to be made. Either I was to confine my activity to the temporary one of relief, or personal service to unhappy children was to become the central purpose of my life..." - Monsignor John Patrick Carroll-Abbing
In the aftermath of WWII, a young priest made a choice that would change the lives of tens of thousands of people. He dedicated the rest of his life to giving young men and women from across the globe the chance to grow into caring, responsible adults. In 1945, his first "Town" would open in Italy to care for children beset by war, poverty and neglect. His Towns not only cared for these children, but brought international renown to the idea that young people can play a leading role in shaping their communities. This extraordinary feat was made possible by the dream of one man and the thousands of people inspired to help him make it a reality.

Read how it all began! This archival document was recently sent to us on the occasion of our 75th Anniversary by our partners in Italy. It details some of the early and extraordinary accomplishments of Monsignor Carroll-Abbing and the American supporters that believed in his mission. The details of how emergency food supplies were sent to a war-battered nation feel especially timely after this year's pandemic created yet another hunger crisis for our young people. (Thank you to everyone who answered the call of our #MonthofMeals campaign and, like so many decades ago, helped feed hungry children and people around the world.) We're so proud to be a part of a community that has dedicated themselves to caring for the most vulnerable among us for 75 years. |
